Photo‐oxidative degradation of polyethylene triggers significant deterioration in the polymer properties. Much interest is aimed at characterizing and possibly predicting photo‐oxidative damages, at early stages, prior to the occurrence of profound changes in mechanical properties. Herein, we study the degradation of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) films, focusing on surface deterioration processes. Thin films of various molecular weights are exposed to accelerated weathering while their chemical, mechanical and morphological characteristics are monitored throughout by apparent contact angle (CA) measurements, Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), tensile test, and electron microscopy. A significant decrease in the films' CA during degradation is observed. CA is highly sensitive to two simultaneous phenomena with opposing effect: nanoscale surface roughening and composition changes. We found the latter (specifically the evolution of polar groups) to be the dominant parameter affecting the CA behavior. Consequently, simple CA measurements coincide well with conventional FTIR analysis, and are more sensitive to changes occurring at early stages of degradation. The deterioration in the mechanical properties is also characterized and is found to present poor sensitivity and high variability at these early aging stages. Compatibilized and uncompatibilized composites containing various loadings of recycled polypropylene (RPP) and peanut shell powder (PSP) were prepared. An amount of 3 parts by weight per hundred parts of resin of poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (PEAA) was used as a compatibilizer in the RPP/PSP composites. The effect of PEAA and PSP loading on natural weathering was investigated. Composites without PEAA were used as a control, with the samples being tested before exposure to the environment. The PSP loading was varied from 0 to 40 wt%. The samples were exposed to natural weathering in the northern part of Malaysia for 6 months. The results showed that there was a higher decrease in tensile strength and elongation at break in the uncompatibilized composites compared with the compatibilized composites after exposure. Moreover, the tensile modulus increased for both the uncompatibilized and the compatibilized composites after natural weathering. The weight loss for both the uncompatibilized and the compatibilized RPP/ PSP composites with PSP loading of 40 wt% after 6 months exposure was 9.24 and 7.13 wt%, respectively.

Blends containing various percentages of linear low‐density polyethylene and soya powder were prepared. The effects of polyethylene‐graft‐(maleic anhydride) (PE‐g‐MA) as a compatibilizer and soya powder content on the natural weathering were investigated. Blends without PE‐g‐MA were used as controls. The soya powder was varied from 5 to 40 wt% of the blends, and PE‐g‐MA was used at 50 wt% based on soya powder content. The samples were exposed to natural weathering in the northern part of Malaysia for 1 year. Higher decreases in tensile strength and elongation at break of the controls were observed as compared to those of the PE‐g‐MA compatibilized blends after the natural weathering. The Young's modulus of both controls and compatibilized blends increased over the environmental exposure period. A control sample lost 8.8% of its original weight after 1 year of weathering, whereas a compatibilized blend lost 7.5 wt% during the same period. J. VINYL ADDIT.
