Cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanii) and VCO (Virgin Coconut Oil) essential oils contain cinnamaldehyde and lauric acid which have potential for hair growth, they can affect the physical stability of hair tonic preparations. This study aims to determine the physical stability and determine the effect of the irritation effect on hair tonic preparations of a combination of cinnamon essential oil and VCO. Cinnamon essential oil hair tonic preparations were made with a concentration of 1% (F1), 3% (F2), and 5% (F3) and then tested for physical characteristics including organoleptic tests, homogeneity, pH, density test, and viscosity. Evaluation of physical stability was carried out using the cycling test method. Data were statistically analyzed using One Way Anova. The results of the irritation test were analyzed descriptively using the primary irritation index obtained from the appearance of erythema and edema on the rabbit's skin. Observation of the physical stability test on organoleptic and homogeneity showed that formula I had a cloudy white color, a characteristic cinnamon aroma, a slightly thick liquid, and was homogeneous; formula 2 and 3 has a clear color, characteristic of cinnamon aroma, slightly viscous and homogeneous liquid; stable pH in formula 2; stable density in formulas 1, 2 and 3; and stable viscosity in formulas 2 and 3. The results of the hair tonic irritation test showed that the primary irritation index for F1, F2, and F3 was 0.0; 0.3; 0.3 and it can be concluded that F2 and F3 can irritate with very mild categories.

Pegagan is a plant that plays an important role in health because of its secondary metabolite. However, many secondary metabolites tend to be unstable when exposed to UV light and oxygen such as flavonoid and terpenoid. The purpose of this study was to formulate the ethanolic extract of pegagan leaves into nanoparticle preparations to increase the stability of the extract. Nanoparticle preparations were made using the emulsion solvent evaporation method using Poly-Lactic-Co-Glycolic Acid (PLGA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). PLGA acts as a polymer that will coat the extract and PVA as a stabilizer. Variations in the concentration of PLGA used were 50 mg, 75 mg, and 100 mg, while the concentration of PVA used was 40 mg and the extract concentration was 158 mg. Determination of the best formula is done by looking at the results of the percent encapsulation efficiency obtained from the three formulas, namely 93.68%, 85.35%, and 88.76%, respectively. Based on these results, formula 1 was determined as the best formula. The particle size obtained in the best formula was 288.1667±3.4195 nm, the polydispersity index (PDI) was 0.371±0.0045 and the zeta potential value was -10.6333±0.1154. A physical stability test (cycling test method) of the best formula found a decrease in pH of 0.54 and no organoleptic changes or precipitate formed.

Alopecia presented a global challenge, spurring the search for new treatments. This study evaluated Ipomoea batatas leaf extracts for their ability to stimulate hair growth and inhibit Malassezia furfur. Secondary metabolites were identified and assessed for their potential to inhibit androgen receptors (AR) via LC-MS/MS and in silico analysis. The hair tonic formulation was optimized using a D-optimal mixture design to improve physicochemical properties. The plant’s extracts and fractions exhibited strong antifungal activity against M. furfur and significant hair growth stimulation compared to minoxidil. In silico analysis identified pyropheophorbide A, methyl-Pyropheophorbide A, hyperoside, and quercetin with superior affinity and stability in interacting with AR. The optimized formulation included 96% ethanol, propylene glycol, and Tween 80 to enhance hair tonic properties. I. batatas leaves showed promising potential in treating alopecia through hair growth stimulation, antifungal activity, and potential inhibition of AR. These findings opened avenues for further research and development in alopecia therapeutics.
