Forming And Managing Project Teams In A Large Capstone Design Course

Abstract: (UK). For many years he was management consultant at Ford Motor Company in high-tech education and training. In 1994 he received the ASEE Chester F. Carlson Award for innovation in engineering education. He has co-authored books on creative problem solving, engineering design, entrepreneurship and innovation. He has work experience in industry, seven universities in the U.S. (in three of them as dean of engineering) and four universities abroad (most recently on sabbatical at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technolog… Show more

“…Engineering teams can produce better results when they value and utilize diverse ideas, but the process of integrating and reconciling these ideas often leads to conflict. 9 This means that an important aspect of assessing teamwork skills is determining whether each student is effective in handling critical team conflict. Even during tense phases of the project, we expect students to demonstrate several behaviors to be considered effective in teamwork skills including being respectful of others, acting professionally, providing constructive criticism and not engaging in personal attacks, and being able to identify objectively strengths and weaknesses in themselves and others.…”

“…Teamwork has long been recognized as an essential skill for engineering graduates to be successful in today's workplace [1,2]. It is very common for engineering programs to use experiential learning in the form of team projects in various courses ranging from the introductory engineering courses to capstone courses to help students develop this important skill [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. Though these team based projects do provide students with opportunities to gain teamwork experiences, it does not necessarily mean that students will develop effective teamwork skills from these team project experiences.…”

“…Depending on the background of the instructor and whether the course is one or two semesters, a laundry list of additional topics might include sustainability and "green design" concepts, 1 process safety, 2 Good Manufacturing Practice, Six Sigma, 3 optimization, 4 selecting materials of construction, reading P&ID's, heat exchanger network or reactor network synthesis, environmental regulations, engineering ethics, batch scheduling, and product design. 5 Senior design is also the last opportunity to reinforce "soft skills" such as teamwork 6,7 and communication. 8,9…”
