Formation of Uniform Aminosilane Thin Layers:  An Imine Formation To Measure Relative Surface Density of the Amine Group

Abstract: The surface of a fused silica and oxidized silicon wafer (SiO2/Si(100)) was treated with (4-aminophenyl)trimethoxysilane (1), (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (2), (3-aminopropyl)diethoxymethylsilane (3), and (3-aminopropyl)ethoxydimethylsilane (4) in solution. The thickness of thus formed aminosilane layers was determined with ellipsometry. In most cases silane coupling agents produce monolayers of 6−10 Å thickness, but reagent 2 gives multilayers with variable thickness (6−100 Å) depending upon the dipping tim… Show more

“…(assuming spherical nanoparticles and negligible aminosilane coating contribution to nanoparticle density). Moreover, for a typical Si-O bond length of 0.16 nm, it is possible to calculate a thickness of APTMS on the nanoparticle surface of about 2.5 ± 0.5 layers, very close to XPS and the literature data [22][23][24][25][26].…”

“…Packing densities of the mixed monolayers were determined through UV-vis spectroscopy (Perkin-Elmer Lambda 14 spectrometer). [ 27,28 ] Photoswitching between azobenzene isomers was done with a UV light emitting diode (LED) combination assembled by Sahlmann Photochemical Solutions. Switching from trans to cis confi guration was induced by UV light of 365 nm (Nichia LED, NCSU033, 350 mW).…”

“…Improved deposition protocols allow thinner, more regular, APTES interfaces to be made (Moon et al 1996;Han et al 2006), but multilayer formation remains an intrinsic potential of the reagent (Kallury et al 1994). APTES monomers can form infinite, cross-linked siloxane polymer lattices because APTES is a multi(tri)-valent silane.…”
