Formation of poly(acrylic acid)/alumina composite via in situ polymerization of acrylic acid adsorbed within oxide pores

Abstract: Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) adsorption on alumina has been widely studied to provide composite materials. This work attempts to form PAA/alumina composites via in situ polymerization of acrylic acid pre-adsorbed on alumina. Effective acrylic acid adsorption in porous γ-alumina was realized with incipient wetness impregnation method. The adsorbed acrylic acid was then polymerized via reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization in aqueous medium. The solution properties of the as-prepared PAA/a… Show more

“…The sample was also tested using thermogravimetry (TG) (plot not shown). Assuming the mass loss in the range of 200–500°C belonged to organic matter, that is, PAA, and the polymer coverage of the oxide surface was evenly distributed, the calculated S BET was 164.0 m 2 /g using the method described in our recent publication, in which molecular PAA was in situ prepared via free radical polymerization of pre‐adsorbed acrylic acid . The measured value confirms the calculated value, suggesting the uniform coverage of PAA on alumina surface.…”

“…Acrylic resins are a well-known class of pH-responsive polymers that have been used as absorbers, anti-fouling agents and carriers, and they have excellent resistance to weather, heat and chemical. To date, researchers from worldwide are dedicated on the issues corresponding to raw materials, production technology and product quality of acrylic resins [101][102][103]. DESs exhibit similar properties to ILs that make them suitable for the processing of acrylic resins, which not only prevents the use of VOCs, but also offers a green approach for the functionalization of acrylic resins.…”
