Formation of phenolic compounds in various cultivars of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Abstract: The ability to synthesize various secondary metabolites is a specific feature of higher plants. The most common secondary metabolites are phenolic compounds or polyphenols formed practically in all plant cells [1,2]. Increasing interest in these substances is due to their use as capillary-protecting, cholagogue, antitumor, and other drugs [3][4][5].Phenolic compounds differ considerably in composition and chemical activity. They include phenylpropanoids (hydroxycinnamic and hydroxybenzoic acids) and flavonoids… Show more

“…Flavonoid research on the Poaceae reported the presence of flavone- C -glycosides, tricin 5-glucoside, tricin 7-glucoside, isovitexin, iso-orientin glycosides, and lucenin 7-methyl ether . Moreover, the soluble phenolic compounds including flavonols were considered in T. aestivum L . Two new flavonoid- C -glycosides named triticuside A and triticuside B were isolated from the bran of this species .…”

“…Catechin is the most commonly described flavonoid present in barley. All these soluble phenolic compounds are known to have protective effects against pathogen infection, UV irradiation, and oxidative stress and these effects indirectly reflect the resistance of the plant against stress (22). Flavan derivates have been described as inducible antimicrobial metabolites in rice as phytoalexins (23) activities and are capable of metal complexation, of exhibiting antimicrobial properties, and of having an affinity for proteins, resulting in enzyme inhibition and/or protein precipitation (24).…”

“…The content of total soluble PHCs and flavonoids was determined in the extracts by the spectrophotometric method using the Folin and Denis reactive at 725 nm and aluminum chloride at 415 nm, respectively (Zaprometov, 1971;Zagoskina et al, 2005). In both cases calibration curves were made using rutin.…”
