Formation of heavy quarks in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract: We investigate the production of heavy quarks in continuum and bound states in nuclear collisions. Creation rates for free bband tiquark pairs and for bottomonium and toponium in the ground state are computed at energies of the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and Superconducting Super Collider. Central and peripheral heavy-ion collisions are discussed. For top-quark creation we assumed a mass range of 90 5 m , 5 250 GeV. The creation rate for top quarks in peripheral coll… Show more

“…S i n c e . the 'bare' value gs = 2 for the cdd proton yields p ~i = 4.0909 pn, which is in fair agreement with the measured value psi = 4.1 106 pn F i g and Williams 1953, Raghavan 1989. we choose gs = 2 (actually, the measured value gs = 5.5856 does not modify this correction to the energy splitting by more than 7%).…”

“…The first estimate of the production of heavy quarks in such collisions was done in [199]. Central collisions were not excluded in their approach.…”

“…It was found there that 210 t t pairs will be produced in a 10 6 s OO run at LHC (with an assumed luminosity of 1.4 × 10 31 cm −2 s −1 ). Top quark production has been studied before in [199]. In [45] the photon spectrum excluding central collisions and a more modern version of the gluon distribution function is used.…”

“…Shadowing plays little role in the total cross sections since at y = 0 and p T = 0, The only previous study of tt production via photon-gluon fusion in heavy ion collisions [17] used a very different photon flux. The flux was integrated over all r, including the nuclear interior, modelling the nucleus as a homogenously charged sphere.…”
