Formation of Fine Particles from Curcumin/PVP by the Supercritical Antisolvent Process with a Coaxial Nozzle

Abstract: The production of fine particles via the supercritical carbon dioxide (SC–CO2) antisolvent process was carried out. The experiments were conducted at temperatures of 40–60 °C and pressures of 8–12 MPa with a 15 mL min–1 carbon dioxide (CO2) and 0.5 mL min–1 feed solution flow rate. As a feed solution, the curcumin and the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) powder were dissolved in acetone and ethanol at concentrations of 1.0 mg mL–1 and 2.0–4.0% in weight, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images descri… Show more

“…The absence of characteristic bands of curcumin in PEO-EC-Co-Cur@PVP may indicate the PEO-EC-Co-PVP polymer blend as a good carrier for the encapsulation of curcumin molecules. Favorable hydrogen bonding between curcumin and PVP is further proven with the disappearance of the sharp peak of phenolic stretching of curcumin and the shift of carbonyl stretching vibration of PVP into a lower wavenumber …”

“…xanthorrhiza rhizome extract into an aqueous medium was affected by the content of the PVP polymer in the particle products, where the release rate of C. xanthorrhiza rhizome extract increased with the increasing PVP polymer amount in the particle products. , Figure illustrates the UV–vis spectral profile of the collected particle product dissolution from the feed solution comprising C. xanthorrhiza rhizome extract and PVP with a ratio of 1:10 in distilled water.…”

“…The former can also prevent the agglomeration of the particle product. Furthermore, the intermolecular interaction between curcumin and PVP can lead to a higher thermal stability of curcumin via carboxyl and carbonyl conjugations [ 58 ]. Altogether, the addition of PVP to curcumin may improve the solubility and stability of curcumin, resulting in better pharmacokinetic properties.…”
