The Upper Ediacaran to Lower Cambrian of the Sichuan Basin in South China has long been considered to be dominated by shallow-water deposition. Hydrocarbon exploration, however, has revealed that a NW-SE trending intraplatform trough formed in the basin during the same period. Although different models have been proposed, the formation and evolution of the trough are still not fully understood. In this study, we investigate both the origin of the intraplatform trough and the formation of the Sichuan Basin by integrating seismic interpretation, well correlation and tectonic subsidence analysis. The seismic and well data clearly show three stages of development of the trough. The first stage, in the early Late Ediacaran, is characterized by considerable thinning of the lower two members of the Upper Ediacaran from the platform margins to the trough. In the second stage, in the late Late Ediacaran, the platform margins backstepped and the extent of the trough expanded significantly to a width of ca. ~400 km. The third stage, in the early Early Cambrian, was dominated by gradual filling of the trough and onlapping of the platform margins.Backstripped tectonic subsidence curves show one, or two closely spaced episodes of linear subsidence starting at ~550 Ma and then decreasing exponentially until ~450 Ma. The shape of the subsidence curves is consistent with formation of the Sichuan Basin by low, and slow amounts of lithospheric stretching of thickened cratonic lithosphere. The tectonic subsidence increases from the centre to the NW of the basin. Interestingly the margins of the trough do not correlate with contoured values of increased tectonic subsidence and we infer that the trough was a palaeogeographic embayment in a large carbonate platform that developed in a broad, ramp-like area of slow and low subsidence tilting down to the proto-Tethyan ocean located to the NW of the basin.

According to the drilling and seismic data, the Late Sinian-Early Cambrian intra-cratonic rift was found in Deyang-Anyue area of the Upper Yangtze craton. This rift is controlled by tensional fault and distributed in NNW trending with the NS length of 320km and EW width of 50-300km. After three stages of rift evolution, i.e., the forming stage, developing stage and dying stage, a favorable near-source accumulation assemblage was formed. The research results indicate that: (1) the sedimentary stage of Late Sinian Dengying Formation is the rift forming stage, during which through-basin facies sedimentation is developed in the rift, while platform marginal facies mounds and shoals are developed on both side, controlling the formation and distribution of high-quality reservoirs in Dengying Formation; (2) the sedimentation stage of Early Cambrian Meishucun-Qiongzhusi Formation is the rift developing stage, during which deep-water continental shelf facies argillaceous rocks are filled in the rift with a thickness of 500-1,000m, indicating the sedimentation stage of high-quality source rocks; (3) the sedimentation stage of Canglangpu Formation is the rift dying stage, terminating the evolution history of intra-cratonic rift by gap filling. The intra-cratonic rift is a key factor for the formation of Anyue giant gas field, where the high-quality source rocks provide abundant gases for the giant gas field. A regional lateral sealing occurred during the rapid rising of the western paleo-uplift in Central Sichuan during the Late Yanshan-Himalayan period, favorable to the preservation of the Gaoshiti-Moxi giant gas field on the east wing of the rift. The intra-cratonic rift and its role in giant gas accumulation provide a significant reference for deep oil and gas exploration in paleo-craton basins.

The shale gas exploration and development potential in the Sichuan Basin is huge. Production prediction and risk quantification are important in planning of natural gas resources. Hubbert and Gauss models are used to predict the growth trend of production in the gas reservoir. Based on the prediction results, the Monte Carlo simulation is used to calculate the probability of production realization. The evaluation matrix of risk level is established by using indices of production realization probability and dispersion degree for assessing the risk level of shale gas production. The results show that: 1) when URR is at the same growth rate, Gauss model has a more stable yield growth trend than Hubbert model, and the correlation coefficients of Gauss model are all higher than that of Hubbert model. This means that the production prediction results of the Gauss model have higher accuracy. 2) According to the Gauss model, the shale gas will reach peak production of (280–460) × 108 m3/a in 2042 and will have stable production from 2037 to 2047. By the end of the stable production stage, the URR exploitation degree is about 60%; 3) The Monte Carlo method can be used to obtain the production realization probability for each year. The risk level evaluation matrix can be established by taking the probability of realization and the dispersion degree as evaluation indices, which can provide the systematization of the risk levels. This study is helpful to deepen the understanding of natural gas exploration and development. And it is of great significance to gas field development planning and production index realization.
