Formation and Decay of Electronic Excitations Localized near Divacancies in Alkali Halides

Abstract: The thermal quenching or plastic strain of RbCI, KC1, and KBr crystals leads to an increase in the number of associations of anion and cation vacancies. Using the methods of VUV spectroscopy, electronic excitations localized near divacancies are detected at 5 K. The process of radiative and nonradiative decay of these excitations is studied as well as the process of radiational creation of divacancies.

“…Similar broad non-elementary excitation bands of luminescence connected with the absorption of anions surrounding v a v c were revealed in many AHC (Lushchik et al, 1991). The emission of 5.2 eV is effectively excited in a narrow region slightly below and above the exciton resonance.…”

“…Radiation creation of the groups of spatially correlated defects (GSCDs) has been revealed in highly pure KCl and KBr crystals X-irradiated at 4.2 K. The conclusions on the formation of F-V K -I triplets were based on a careful study of TSL and tunnel luminescence [28,29], of the annealing of the EPR signal of V K and H centres [38,39] or of radiation-induced optical absorption and photostimulated luminescence bands connected with a certain type of Frenkel defects (F, H, α and I centres) [40,41]. The creation of F-V K -I triplets by VUV radiation was investigated in KBr at 8 K [42].…”

“…The spatial separation between genetic F and H centres, formed during the sample irradiation at the recombination of conduction electrons with self-trapped holes, is smaller than in the case of F-H creation due to the decay of STEs. In KCl and KBr, STEs decay at 4.2-6 K into F-H pairs with r FH exceeding 4-6 interanion distances [8,41,44]. At the same time, long-lived F-H pairs form no more than 10% of the total amount of the pairs produced in KCl by the photons that selectively generate electrons and holes (e-h pairs) [45].…”

“…Позже были обнаружены и изучены оптические харак-теристики экситонов, локализованных около анионных вакансий (см. следующий раздел) или бивакасий вo многих ЩГК [55] и даже в ионных оксидах MgO [56]. Экситоноподобные состояния возникают в ЩГК и около примесных ионов, полосы таких связанных экситонов, так называемые D-полосы ртутеподобных центров, дав-но обнаружены в ряде ЩГК (см., например, [57,58]).…”
