Formalizing Functional Flow Block Diagrams Using Process Algebra and Metamodels

Abstract: Abstract-Functional flow block diagrams (FFBDs) are a traditional tool of systems engineering and remain popular in some systems engineering domains. However, their lack of formal definition makes FFBDs imprecise and impossible to rigorously analyze. The inability to analyze FFBDs may allow specification errors to remain undetected until well into the system design process or, worse, until the system is operational. To help address these problems, we have developed a precise formal syntax and semantics for FFB… Show more

“…This synergy of thinking about actions and their in-and outputs corresponds to the elements of a function model. A common interpretation of a function is that it transforms inputs into outputs (Otto, et al, 2001 andMcInnes, et al, 2010). Here, the "action" can be interpreted as "function", the "resource" as the "input" and "deliverable" as the "output" of the function.…”

“…FFBDs are the formal graphical representations in systems engineering for behavior of complex hierarchical systems. A formal definition is referenced for FFBDs with Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) in process algebra [11]. It depicted the mathematical perspective of defining the system with concurrent processes.…”

“…Sun, et al, [27] have used a process mining method to analyse the distributed execution of a fragmented workflow. McInnes, et al, [28] define formal syntax and semantics for functional flow block diagrams for system analysis. The details of the most commonly used workflow modelling techniques and their suitability for modelling healthcare processes are discussed in the following paragraphs.…”
