Formaldehyde emission from PVC–wood composites containing MDF sanding dust

Abstract: The main purpose of this work was to study the formaldehyde emission from wood plastic composites (WPCs) containing polyvinyl chloride (PVC), wood flour, and sanding dust of medium density fiberboard (MDF). Wood floor was replaced with 10, 15, and 20% MDF sanding dust (as a wood-based panel waste), and the composites were manufactured by the extrusion method. Formaldehyde emission from WPCs was measured using two different methods: the desiccator method according to ISO 12460 and the flask method according to … Show more

“…The performance of the polymer concrete is strongly dependant on various types and mixed proportion of aggregates and resins. [ 7,8 ] For these unique properties, polymer concretes are used in various applications including floor, pavement, repairing concrete structure, highway median barriers, acid tank, electric culverts, drains and precast products. [ 9 ] Previous studies have investigated the performance analysis of the polymer concrete and the loading of polymer in the concrete in order to cost reduction.…”

“…The highest tensile strength value of MDF powder-added PVC composites was found as 22.96 MPa for 10% MDF powder-added composite, while the lowest tensile strength value was determined for 20% MDF powderadded composite as being 19.9 MPa. Chaharsoughi et al (2018) produced wood plastic composites containing PVC and 10, 15, and 20% sanding dust of medium density fiberboard as a wood-based panel waste. They determined that the flexural strength of the composites considerably decreased with the 10% MDF sanding dust.…”

“…Most of free formaldehyde will escape in the form of gas during the extrusion process but a part of free formaldehyde will be trapped in the composites. [29] Therefore, composites made from UF with a low free formaldehyde content are more beneficial to human health with the same amount of adhesive.…”
