BPMN 2.0 standard has a huge uptake in modelling business processes within the same organisation or collaborations involving multiple interacting participants. It results that providing a solid foundation to enable BPMN designers to understand their models in a consistent way is becoming more and more important. In our investigation we define and exploit a formal characterisation of the collaborations' semantics, specifically and directly given for BPMN models, to provide a classification of BPMN collaborations. In particular, we refer to collaborations involving processes with arbitrary topology, thus overcoming the well-structuredness limitations. The proposed classification is based on some of the most important correctness properties in the business process domain, namely safeness and soundness. We prove, with a uniform formal framework, some conjectured and expected results and, most of all, we achieve novel results for BPMN collaborations concerning the relationships between safeness and soundness, and their compositionality, that represent major advances in the state-of-the-art.

With the increasing popularity of cloud computing, especially the emergence of Business Process as a Service (BPaaS), more and more enterprises construct their process collaborations based on BPaaS services. Indeed, the collaborative business process built by BPaaS services can be seen as a complex system, as it covers multiple business processes (i.e., BPaaS services) and they act independently. Since business processes corresponding to BPaaS services are usually provided by different cloud service providers, and their interactions are unforeseen in advance, in actual execution, some behavioral anomalies (e.g., deadlocks) may occur. To this end, based on BPaaS services, we propose an approach to build process collaborations in the cloud. In this approach, we first model collaborative business processes using open nets. Then, we check their correctness based on stubborn sets. Finally, in case they are partially correct, we generate reliable paths for the coordination execution between business processes. Our approach is implemented in the PIPE (an open tool for Petri nets) and evaluated on actual cases that show its effectiveness and efficiency.

This demo introduces BProVe, a tool supporting automated verification of Business Process models. BProVe analysis is based on a formal operational semantics defined for the BPMN 2.0 modelling language, and is provided as a freely accessible service that uses open standard formats as input data. Furthermore a plug-in for the Eclipse platform has been developed making available a tool chain supporting users in modelling and visualising, in a friendly manner, the results of the verification. Finally we have conducted a validation through more than one thousand models, showing the effectiveness of our verification tool in practice. (Demo video: https://youtu.be/iF5OM7vKtDA)
