Whereas the existence of exocentric compounds is taken for granted in the literature on compounding, there are just a few studies devoted to the nature and types of exocentric compounds cross-linguistically and in African languages in particular, leaving exocentricity in African languages severely under-researched. This paper seeks to contribute to knowledge on exocentricity by exploring the range of exocentric compounds in three Kwa languages-Akan, Ewe and Gain the context of the typology of exocentric compounds proposed by Bauer (2008a, 2010) who posited five typesbahuvrihi, exocentric synthetic, exocentric co-compounds, transpositional exocentric and metaphorical compounds. Appah (2016b, 2017b) argued that three of the five types (bahuvrihi, exocentric synthetic and transpositional exocentric compounds) with various subtypes occur in Akan. The equivalent of Bauer's metaphorical compounds was subsumed under bahuvrihi compounds, while the absence of exocentric co-compounds was argued to be an areal feature, given the observation that co-compounds are rare in Africa (Wälchli 2005). This paper shows that apart from exocentric co-compounds, the rest are found in the languages under discussion to varying extents. All three languages have metaphorical and location bahuvrihi compounds, but the status of the possessor bahuvrihi type is not certain, except in Akan. Ewe has agentive exocentric synthetic compounds, but not the action and patient types, whilst Ga has none. Again, only Ga does not have transpositional exocentric compounds. Finally, it is observed that all the compounds are nouns, notwithstanding the syntactic category of the constituents. This is another potential areal feature.

Στην παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή εξετάζεται πειραματικά η σημασιολογική επίδραση που ασκεί ο μηχανισμός της σύνθεσης στη Νέα Ελληνική σε σύνθετα με τα βασικά χρώματα. Για τη διεξαγωγή του πειράματος χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως εργαλείο το πείραμα των Berlin & Kay (1969), σύμφωνα με τους οποίους κάθε γλώσσα περιέχει βασικές κατηγορίες χρωμάτων και για κάθε χρωματικό όρο ανά γλώσσα υπάρχει μία κεντρική τιμή. Στόχος της εμπειρικής αυτής μελέτης είναι α) να εξεταστεί πειραματικά αν η αντίληψη των ομιλητών στα σύνθετα χρώματα βρίσκεται μεταξύ των δύο συνθετικών ή τείνει περισσότερο στο πρώτο ή στο δεύτερο συνθετικό, με βάση το χρωματικό φάσμα ή μέσω του μηχανισμού της παράφρασης, και να μελετηθούν οι σημασιολογικές διεργασίες που επιτελούνται μέσω της σύνθεσης, β) να ερευνηθεί αν η αλλαγή στη σειρά των συστατικών δημιουργεί και διαφορετική εκτίμηση από τους ομιλητές. Παρά το γεγονός ότι στη βιβλιογραφία τα σύνθετα με τα βασικά χρώματα θεωρούνται ως παρατακτικά και παρ’ όλο που θα περιμέναμε ο φυσικός ομιλητής να έχει την εκτίμηση πως το δεύτερο συστατικό είναι το πιο βασικό, με βάση τον κανόνα της δεξιόστροφης κεφαλής που ισχύει για την Ελληνική, τα δεδομένα των πειραμάτων διαψεύδουν και τις δύο αυτές υποθέσεις. Συγκεκριμένα, η αντίληψη για τα σύνθετα τείνει περισσότερο στο πρώτο συνθετικό, π.χ. στο κιτρινοπράσινο η εκτίμηση των ομιλητών τείνει περισσότερο στο κίτρινο παρά στο πράσινο, ενώ στο πρασινοκίτρινο δίνεται έμφαση περισσότερο στο πράσινο από ό,τι στο κίτρινο. Αυτό μπορεί ενδεχομένως να συνδέεται με την προοδευτική (από τα αριστερά στα δεξιά) επεξεργασία του λόγου, όπως παρατηρείται σε προτασιακό επίπεδο. Επίσης, η εναλλαγή στη σειρά των συστατικών δεν δημιουργεί και διαφορετική εκτίμηση. Η επιστημονική συμβολή της παρούσας διδακτορικής διατριβής έγκειται στο ότι για πρώτη φορά εξετάζεται πειραματικά η επίδραση που ασκεί ο μηχανισμός της σύνθεσης στην ερμηνεία σε σύνθετα με τα βασικά χρώματα. Ως προς το θεωρητικό υπόβαθρο προτείνεται μια νέα κατηγοριοποίηση των παρατακτικών συνθέτων της Νέας Ελληνικής, βασισμένη στη λεξική σημασιολογία, ενώ για πρώτη φορά γίνεται συστηματική αναπαράσταση των συνθέτων της Νέας Ελληνικής με διαγράμματα Venn.

We begin with the patterns of exocentric compounds in the Indo‐European daughter languages and trace their development to the present. In Germanic, their strength diminished as a result of diachronic changes leading to the integration of many forms into endocentric suffixation patterns. Consequently, the term exocentric compound has undergone a modification as it has come to identify the forms that resisted the trend to endocentricity. A different type of diachronic change resulted in the demise of one of the original patterns in Latin, setting the stage for the emergence in Romance of an innovative exocentric pattern to fill the gap.
