This study examines the critical interaction between seasonal precipitation variability and forest maturity in determining ion deposition patterns in rehabilitated forest ecosystems. This research was conducted in rehabilitated forest sites in Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia that had ecologically similar plant distribution, species, and age in each planting area. This facilitated the standardization of rainfall deposition in the different study plots which streamlined the study of these specific facets of ecosystem dynamics. The goal is to understand how seasonal changes and the age of the forest influence the chemical composition of the flux that relates to the movement and deposition of nutrients through the forest ecosystem. This flux is a key factor in the health of the forest ecosystem and nutrient cycling. Using ion exchange resin (IER) samplers, we accurately measured and compared the deposition of different ions (Ca2+, Na+, Fe2+, Cu2+, NO3−, NH4+ and SO42−) across different seasons and forest ages. The deposition of Ca2+ and NH₄+ was significantly lower in the low‐precipitation season than in the high‐precipitation season in all forest stands, regardless of the year they were established (1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, and 2009). In contrast, ions such as Na+, Fe2+, Cu2+, NO3− and SO42− showed no clear seasonal fluctuations. In addition, the study shows that through‐fall in forest stands from 2002, 2005 and 2009 had higher concentrations of Ca2+ in both seasons than in 1996 and 1999. Interestingly, forest stands from 2009 and 2002 had elevated levels of Na+ and SO₄2− in seasons with low precipitation, while stands from 1996 had higher levels in seasons with high precipitation. Our results emphasize the crucial role of precipitation amount and canopy age in determining ion deposition in forest ecosystems. By demonstrating the significant influence of precipitation seasonality and forest maturity on the chemical composition of throughfall, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of nutrient dynamics in developing forest landscapes and provides valuable insights for ecological restoration measures.

Purpose Secondary forest loss in Singapore has recently emerged as a contentious issue that tests the relationships between state, public and civil society, but debates on this issue have occurred without the benefit of supporting information on the spatial extent, and understanding of multiple socio-ecological impacts arising from their gradual disappearance. The purpose of this paper is to fill these knowledge gaps to contribute to development of approaches to manage land developments on secondary forests. Design/methodology/approach This study evaluated the past and potential future losses of spontaneous re-growth forest through spatial analyses of vegetation cover maps combined with national land use plans using remote sensing and GIS. The socio-ecological impacts of such losses were interpreted from published writings, which comprise scientific publications and public opinion in news media. Findings Secondary forest losses accounted for more than half of total vegetation cover reduction between 2007 and 2012, and future potential losses amount to about 4,700 ha of land if these are fully developed over the next 10-15 years. The socio-ecological consequences of such losses are identified. Strong public opinion are reflected in the large number of news article on the topic over the last four years, pointing to the emergence of a contentious issue that requires careful management. Originality/value This paper conducted the first assessment of the spatial extent of secondary forests losses, and an extensive review of public opinion of the matter, and the results validated the significance of this topic.

Less is known about studies into the effects of precipitation season and forest stands on ion deposition in restored forest ecosystems. In the present study, we measured and compared ion deposition (Ca²⁺, Na⁺, Fe²⁺, Cu²⁺, NO₃⁻, NH₄⁺, and SO₄²⁻) in rehabilitated forest sites in Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia. Through-fall ion depositions were measured with an ion-exchange resin (IER) sampler. In all forest stand years, Ca²⁺ and NH4+ depositions were consistently lower in the low precipitation season than in the high precipitation season, whereas there were no discernible patterns for Na⁺, Fe²⁺, Cu²⁺, NO₃⁻, or SO₄²⁻ between high and low precipitation seasons. The results also show that through-fall in forest stands in 2002, 2005, and 2008 had higher amounts of Ca²⁺ than through-fall in forest stands in 1996 and 1999 during both seasons. Through-fall from forest stands between 2008 and 2002 showed higher levels of Na⁺ and SO²− in low-precipitation seasons, whereas through-fall from forest stands from 1996 had higher levels in high-precipitation seasons. Overall, these results confirm the significance of rainfall volume and forest canopy stand in defining ion deposition status in the forest by demonstrating that ion deposition is influenced by precipitation season and forest stand via through-fall.
