Background: Forensic radiography is an important component in forensic sciences. There seems to be a lack of recent studies in the literature on the knowledge and training of forensic pathologists and registrars performing forensic radiography at forensic pathology mortuaries in South Africa.Aim: To evaluate the knowledge and training of forensic pathologists (consultants) and registrars performing forensic radiography at a forensic pathology mortuary in the Free State province, South Africa.Setting: A prospective study was conducted at a conveniently selected forensic pathology mortuary located in the Free State province of South Africa.Method: Personnel performing forensic radiography at the selected mortuary were invited to participate in the study. An exploratory quantitative study design was used. The research tool was a self-administered questionnaire comprising open- and closed-ended questions. Four registrars and four consultants (n = 8) completed the questionnaire.Results: Training was only received on computed tomography (n = 1; 12.5%), the C-arm machine (n = 1; 12.5%) and the digital X-ray mobile machine (n = 1; 12.5%) Lodox on corpse positioning (n = 7; 87.5%) and setting of exposure factors (n = 2; 25%).Conclusion: Lack of training of the personnel performing forensic radiography, at the selected mortuary was identified. Training is required in image acquisition protocols, quality control tests of the X-ray machines, setting technical factors and operation of various X-ray machines.Contribution: Training of registered radiation workers who perform forensic radiography in mortuaries is essential to produce high-quality ionising radiation images and ensure their own and other staff members’ safety.

Objectives: The identification process is very important to determine the identity of the corpse. Identification through teeth is a primary identification method that is often used because teeth have a high degree of individuality. Identification through teeth can be analyzed through dental anomalies. Dental anomalies can assist in the identification process because of their uniqueness, stability, and high incidence in different populations. This paper aims to provide information on the importance of dental anomalies as a relevant and scientific means for identification purposes. Review: Dental anomalies can be defined as morphological abnormalities of the teeth that occur at the stage of growth and development of teeth. Dental anomalies are also inherited disorders that can occur as part of a syndrome. The wide variety of dental abnormalities in the form of size, number, morphology, structure or position of teeth in the oral cavity that can be possessed by each individual can be a characteristic of that individual. Conclusion: The use of dental anomalies in identification has been scientifically recognized with proper diagnosis and writing of dental anomalies in the medical record can be used for identification purposes in the forensic field.

In Forensic dentistry,dental knowledge is used for the civil and criminal laws,which are imposed by police agencies for the criminal justice system. Forensic dentistry is a field of forensic science that deals with the justice assistance in the cases of person identification.Since 49 AD Identification techniques applications was registered throughout our history. Bite marks serves as a main source in crimes such as child abuse,sexual abuse and murders,where the criminal uses the teeth as weapon,thereby teeth marking will be present neither on victim's skin nor on the objects present at the crime scene. Bite marks investigation are an intricate technique that carries subjectivity, various isolating opinions and generating arguments. This article consists of a narrative literature review and discusses various ways in the identification of bite marks performed with highlighting its recent advanced methods, their importance and also pointing out the role of the dentist.
