Forensic Building: Deterioration and Defect in Concrete Structures

Abstract: Abstract. Forensic building is needed to examine the affected building structure components to assess the structural integrity. This paper highlights some of the studies involved on affected concrete structures in various building types where the non-destructive test (NDT) and destructive tests. The structural integrity can be evaluated based on the extent of deterioration from the experimental results for instance the cause of the corrode reinforcements was due to inadequate concrete cover, whereas the failur… Show more

“…In this sense, building failure refers to the aging of the buildings (Mac- Barango and Kakulu, 2011). This is seconded by Jamaluddin et al (2017), whereby physical and structural deteriorations are two variables that contribute to building failure. While the building age can be a factor in determining maintenance costs, it will also depend on the standard of maintenance that the building has received over the years (Mac-Barango and Kakulu, 2011).…”

“…While the building age can be a factor in determining maintenance costs, it will also depend on the standard of maintenance that the building has received over the years (Mac-Barango and Kakulu, 2011). A structure's strength and stability are substantially decreased when anything goes wrong with the design (Al-khatam, 2003;Chew et al, 2004;Cunningham, 2013;Jamaluddin et al, 2017). Building structure is concerned with the size, shape and complexity of the building.…”

“…Cracks are one of the critical structural defects to determine an early possible structural failure in a building integrity inspection [17]. Building surveyors conduct structural inspection by collecting visual data to identify various defects due to environmental exposure during the service life of the structure (such as cracks, loss of material, rusting of metal bindings, etc).…”
