Foreign experience in veterinaryapplication of scintigraphy

Abstract

Foreign experience in the use of radiopharmaceuticals has shown the accuracy of the diagnosis of diseases of the kidneys, heart, lungs, soft tissues and blood vessels. The use of scintigraphy allows you to recognize morphofunctional changes in individual organs or systems, as well as metabolic disorders, using radiation obtained from the administration of a radiopharmaceutical. For example, Technetium-99 (99m Tc) is used to diagnose incomplete bone fractures in unproductive animals and sports horses; in dogs with hypothyroidism, a malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland, as well as in cats with hyperthyroidism. Currently, scintigraphy is rarely used in domestic veterinary practice due to a number of reasons - the high cost of radionuclides, compliance with safety requirements, additional knowledge of veterinary specialists, and most importantly, that animals that have been injected with a radioactive compound or implanted with radioactive sources cannot be released from the clinic until the veterinarian is sure that the dose that people will receive from the animal does not exceed the maximum permissible concentrations.
