Foreign Body Induced Neuralgia: A Diagnostic Challenge

Abstract: Neuropathic pain is caused by neural injury or painful states associated with either peripheral or central nerve injury. One of the aetiologies of this type of pain is iatrogenic trauma. This case highlights the features of peripheral neuropathic pain caused by foreign body left in the mental foramen following a previous surgical procedure. The foreign body was detected on routine radiographic evaluation. Once the foreign body was removed by surgical intervention, the pain resolved. This stresses the importanc… Show more

“…In another case report of foreign body neuralgia, a female patient was prescribed with medications for diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia for many years. Intra-oral radiograph later showed radiopaque foreign body close to the mental foramen and surgical exploration then revealed silver points, guttapercha points and restorative material [5]. Both of the patients were pain free after removal of the foreign body.…”

“…A susuk being a foreign body may cause a foreign body neuralgia. A foreign body neuralgia is a neuropathic pain occurring in the distribution of a nerve or nerves which is induced by the presence of a foreign body [5]. The entrapped foreign bodies can impinge the nerve causing either paroxysmal or continuous type of pain or paresthesia.…”

“…Suture may also lead to foreign body response, resulting in increased inflammation and fibrosis-two factors that are known to induce neuralgia. 45 This was a pilot study with a hypothesis based on previously validated studies utilizing PTB in peripheral nerve injury and repair [29][30][31][32] with several limitations. Our study duration was relatively short (60 days).…”

“…Neuralgia benda asing adalah nyeri neuropatik yang terjadi pada sebaran saraf yang terinduksi oleh kehadiran suatu benda asing. 25 Corpus alienum yang terperangkap dalam tubuh dapat menekan saraf menyebabkan nyeri terus-menerus. Penggunaan gigi tiruan dapat menyebabkan rasa sakit yang disebabkan oleh tekanan susuk pada sayap gigi tiruan akibat peregangan jaringan lunak saat dilakukan pencetakan.…”
