Forbidden hugs in pandemic times

Abstract: We present the results of our monitoring campaigns of the luminous red novae (LRNe) AT 2020hat in NGC 5068 and AT 2020kog in NGC 6106. The two objects were imaged (and detected) before their discovery by routine survey operations. They show a general trend of slow luminosity rise, lasting at least a few months. The subsequent major LRN outbursts were extensively followed in photometry and spectroscopy. The light curves present an initial short-duration peak, followed by a redder plateau phase. AT 2020kog is a … Show more

“…We used the same interstellar extinction and distance values as in Pastorello et al (2019a, see their Table 3). The data of AT 2018hso and AT 2014ej are from Cai et al (2019) and Stritzinger et al (2020), respectively, while those of AT 2020kog and AT 2020hat are from Pastorello et al (2021). In all panels, the curves for the different objects are identified with the symbols labelled in the right panel.…”

“…The follow-up campaign of AT 2019zhd has been carried out during the pandemic period in part, and has been affected by a limited access to the observational facilities. Despite these restrictions, the past few months have been prolific in terms of LRN discoveries as AT 2020hat and AT 2020kog (Pastorello et al 2021) were announced soon after AT 2019zhd.…”

“…There are several different names to the heterogeneous group of transients with typical luminosities between those of classical novae and supernovae and their subclasses (e.g., Mould et al 1990;Bond et al 2003;Rau et al 2007;Ofek et al 2008;Mason et al 2010;Kasliwal 2013;Tylenda et al 2013;Kaminski et al 2018;Pastorello et al 2018;Boian & Groh 2019;Cai et al 2019;Jencson et al 2019;Kashi et al 2019;Howitt et al 2020;Jones 2020;Kamiński et al 2020;Pastorello et al 2021aPastorello et al , 2021bAndrews et al 2021;Blagorodnova et al 2021;Kamiński et al 2021;Klencki et al 2021). These names include intermediate luminosity (red) transients, red novae, luminous red novae (e.g., Jencson et al 2019;Blagorodnova et al 2021), and gap transients (e.g., Kasliwal 2011;Blagorodnova et al 2017;.…”

“…We make use of the modeled progenitor masses, radii, luminosities, and effective temperatures reported in the literature for eight transients: V4332 Sgr (Martini et al 1999), V838 Mon (Munari et al 2002;Bond et al 2003;Tylenda 2005;Tylenda et al 2005b), V1309 Sco (Mason et al 2010;Tylenda et al 2011), NGC4490-OT2011 (Smith et al 2016), M31 LRN 2015 (Williams et al 2015;Kurtenkov et al 2015;MacLeod et al 2017;Blagorodnova et al 2020), M101 LRN 2015(Blagorodnova et al 2017, SN Hunt 248 (Mauerhan et al 2015), and AT2018 bwo (Blagorodnova et al 2021). The extragalactic transients AT 2018hso (Cai et al 2019), AT 2019zhd (Pastorello et al 2021a), AT 2020hat and AT 2020kog (Pastorello et al 2021b) also have pre-outburst absolute magnitudes and colors, but no comparisons to stellar model tracks have been made.…”
