Forage Yield and Persistence of Chicory and English Plantain

Abstract: Graziers in the northeast USA often face forage shortages in midsummer. Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) and English plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) have been introduced in the USA as sumer‐active perennial herbs for pastures. We conducted two experiments at Rock Springs, PA, to evaluate chicory and plantain for yield and persistence under clipping. ‘Grasslands Puna’, ‘Lacerta’, and ‘Forage Feast’ chicory, and ‘Ceres Tonic’ and ‘Grasslands Lancelot’ plantain were sown in field plots in May 1997 (Exp. 1) and 19… Show more

“…Rainfall in June 2001, however, was 1.7 inches greater than in 2000 and 1.4 inches greater than the long-term average. The yields of Grasslands Puna, Forage Feast, and Lacerta were similar to those obtained in other field-plot research at the same site (13). In that study, yields of the three forage chicory cultivars averaged 7100 lb/acre in 2000 and 4700 lb/acre in 2001.…”

“…(Table 3). In other clipped-plot research at the same location, plant density of Puna and Forage Feast decreased by 20 to 50% during the same 2-year period, whereas plant density of Lacerta decreased 80% (13). During 2 years of grazing management in central Pennsylvania, 25 to 45% of Puna and Forage Feast plants and 84% of Lacerta plants died (8).…”

“…However, our yields remained well below those from the northeastern United States, where chicory yields ranged from 6028 to 7200 kg ha -1 DM1 [28,17], and 9640 kg . ha -1 DM reported from New Zealand [19].…”

“…Unfortunately the grazing management requirements to optimise DM yield, persistence and nutritive value of many grasses, legumes and forbs (Sanderson et al 2003, Labreveux et al 2006, Turner et al 2006, Lee et al 2012 do not align with each other or align with perennial ryegrass and white clover. However, there are examples of some species combinations with aligning grazing management which could be components of diverse pastures (e.g.…”
