Football Worlds: business and networks during COVID-19

Abstract: The structure of football can also be conceived as a form of ecosystem, or even a social world, constructed through a network of individuals, within a division of labour, that interact under a set of specific conventions. In this commentary we describe that socially constructed world-Football World. The nature of this structural world makes network theory an appealing framework to explore processes of the football ecosystem during COVID-19. “…The pandemic brought the worldand sportto its knees, and whilst societies adapt to a "new normal", it is unclear what that might be in the long term. Even one of the most lucrative sports in the world, men's football, had its inherent fragility laid bare by COVID-19 (Parnell et al, 2020b). However, Rowe (2020) contends that the pandemic has enabled everyone involved the opportunity to take stock of the direction sport was headed and argues for sociological discourse to play a role in re-setting the course of sport.…”

Across the networked "Football World" (Parnell et al, 2020b), the reintroduction of spectators and fans to stadiums is a critical point of discussion, as there can be no co-creation if only one exists. For some clubs, especially those in the lower leagues, spectators must return to avoid financial collapse.…”
