Tropical and subtropical fruits are recognized as a source of a high content of bioactive compounds and health promoting properties due to their nutritional composition. These beneficial health effects are related to the content of several of these bioactive compounds, mainly flavonoids and non-flavonoid phenolics. Many of these compounds are common in different tropical fruits, such as epicatechin in mango, pineapple, and banana, or catechin in pineapple, cocoa or avocado. Many studies of tropical fruits had been carried out, but in this work an examination is made in the current literature of the flavonoids and non-flavonoid phenolics content of some tropical fruits and their coproducts, comparing the content in the same units, as well as examining the role that these compounds play in health benefits.

SummaryFoodomics is an omic technique that integrates with the study of food and nutrition. The technique delves into the composition, functions, and expression outcomes of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, shedding light on how nutrients influence gene and protein expression. It enables the understanding of cellular processes, functional mechanisms, and molecules involved and identifies targets for bioactive compounds desirable for nutritional intervention strategies. It also facilitates the discovery of biomarkers that elucidate the bioactivities of various food components, offering insights into their implications for individual well‐being. Furthermore, due to the molecular interplay between food and gut microbiome, this technique offered a comprehensive understanding of nutritional dynamics and the role of nutrients in maintaining optimal health. Hence, the article highlights the recent research that deciphers the bioactive activities of various food components, shedding insight on their consequences for individual well‐being and intricating the balance of the gut microbiota using this omic technique.

El creciente volumen de residuos agrícolas sólidos tiene un notable impacto en la salud humana y del planeta. Esos residuos agropecuarios se convierten en desperdicios contaminantes, que implican grandes pérdidas de alimentos en un mundo que sufre graves hambrunas y altos niveles de desnutrición infantil, creando problemas en la disponibilidad de los recursos naturales para la producción. A su vez esos desperdicios afectan la salud pública y se convierten en un factor de aceleración del cambio climático, por las excesivas emisiones de gases de efectos invernadero que generan, constituyendo uno de los grandes retos de la humanidad actual. En este artículo se examinan, a partir de revisión bibliográfica exhaustiva, los efectos negativos derivados de la aplicación de un modelo de economía lineal, basado en un crecimiento económico continuo, que no respeta los valores intrínsecos de la naturaleza, su conservación y sostenibilidad, al tiempo que multiplica las desigualdades económicas y sociales, agota los recursos naturales y altera los equilibrios de la vida en el planeta. También muestra la generación de esos residuos a lo largo de la cadena alimentaria, sus diferencias y la manera de superar los problemas que se han suscitado a nivel global, recurriendo a estrategias que permitan reducir los elevados volúmenes de residuos y desperdicios agrícolas y hacer una gestión más eficiente de los modos de producción y de consumo. Con ese propósito se plantean enfoques alternativos al modelo vigente de economía lineal, para promover la transición a un modelo de economía circular, recurriendo a diversos procedimientos –y en especial, a las técnicas de la química verde y de la economía verde–, que representan enfoques más respetuosos del medio ambiente e inspiran nuevos modelos de gestión de negocios fundados en la sostenibilidad social y ambiental. No obstante, gestionar los cambios para la transición hacia este último implica buscar soluciones en complejos escenarios –con una agricultura de baja productividad y persistentes desigualdades sociales– económicas, hambre, pobreza y malnutrición, bajos niveles educativos y dificultades para acceder a servicios básicos–, que a su vez estimulan la inestabilidad social, la corrupción administrativa y la precariedad política en la toma de decisiones.
