Food, Sustainability, and Science Literacy in One Package? Opportunities and Challenges in Using Aquaponics Among Young People at School, a Danish Perspective

Abstract: The call for sustainable food production and consumption has led to an increased interest and new policy measures to support the circular economy and climate-smart farming practices. The merits of aquaponics and closed-loop nutrient cycling systems are increasingly being examined in terms of sustainable productivity in various settings including urban environments. Aquaponics also has the potential to be applied as a learning tool for people of all ages but especially for young people at school. This chapter s… Show more

“…The study from Hartadiyati et al (2020) shows a significant increase in students' understanding of sustainable development when using hydroponics system in learning. In the initial study by Mikkelsen & Bosire (2019), it was discovered that integrating modern technology into teaching methods could positively impact transformative processes within schools. However, successful and sustainable implementation necessitates careful practical and theoretical deliberation.…”

“…The continued population growth, food demand, scarcity of water, arable land resources, etc ., lead to growing interest in adopting sustainable food production technologies (Mikkelsen & Bosire, 2019; Schmautz et al ., 2016). Aquaponics – an interdisciplinary approach – is a promising paradigm that reduces utilization of resources, recycles the existing resources within the production system, and thus promotes sustainable development (Goddek et al ., 2019a).…”
