“…The level of food restriction is also positively related to the rate of autoshaping with a food reinforcer (Sparber et al 1991). The present results extend previous findings to show that increasing the degree of food restriction accelerates the rate of acquisition of IV cocaine-reinforced behavior.…”

“…Using this procedure, rate of acquisition can be controlled by varying the delay between lever retraction and reinforcer delivery. For example, when food was used as a reinforcer, Messing et al (1986) showed that the acquisition of a lever pressing response occurred at a slower rate as the delay between lever retraction and food pellet delivery was increased from 2 to 4 to 8 s. Furthermore, rate of acquisition has been found to decrease as the level of food restriction increases (Sparber et al 1991). In the present experiment, a short delay was used between lever retraction and delivery of a cocaine infusion or a food pellet (1 s).…”

“…Acquisition of AMPH self‐administration was initiated using an autoshaping procedure similar to that described previously (Carroll & Lac 1993). Three days prior to autoshaping, animals were restricted to 20 g food per day to enhance motivation for drug (Sparber et al 1991). For 5 consecutive days, rats were given a 60‐minute autoshaping session, followed 30 minutes later by a 60‐minute contingent AMPH self‐administration session.…”
