Following the cognitive work analysis train of thought: exploring the constraints of modal shift to rail transport

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to use a semi-structured approach to identifying constraints to modal shift from a variety of perspectives. It is argued that cognitive work analysis offers a new way of thinking about the modal shift problem and helps to generate new insights into potential solutions.

“…As such, commuters' reliance on cars is a main contributor to the capacity issues experienced by urban networks (Chapman, 2007). In addition to network problems, residents of urban cities also encounter environmental issues such as noise and air pollution (Stanton et al, 2013). Globally, the need for user-friendly public transport (PT) systems has become crucial to improve mobility in cities and reduce road transports' contribution to greenhouse gas emissions (Uherek et al, 2010).…”

“…Delays caused by congestion have been estimated to cost businesses billions every year (Brog et al 2009). A key climate change mitigation strategy recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is to create modal shift from private vehicles to PT (Stanton et al 2013). As such, globally, government agencies are adapting their regional transportation planning process to prioritize and encourage the development and use of PT (Handy 2008).…”

“…Cornelissen, Salmon, McClure, et al 2013), rail transport (e.g. Stanton et al 2013) and submarine systems (Stanton and Bessell 2014). A significant challenge faced by HFE practitioners is how to take the outputs from system analysis methods, and indeed other ergonomics methods, and create design concepts that will solve the issues identified.…”
