Follow‐up of the melanoma patient

Abstract: Follow‐up of the melanoma patient involves many different methods of surveillance. Specific guidelines for modalities and frequency are flexible and largely open to physician preference. Patient education and self‐examination are generally viewed as crucial and cost‐effective for recurrence detection. Increased frequency of clinical follow‐up, laboratory studies, and imaging has not demonstrated survival benefit in surveillance. However, appropriate application of these different methods is controversial and e… Show more

“…The therapeutic potential of targeting sphingolipid metabolism in melanoma, a tumour for which a resolutive cure is still lacking and with a high risk of local or disseminated recurrence after surgical excision of the primary tumour [55], has been previously demonstrated [24,27,[56][57][58]. Notably, some studies showed the involvement of A-SMase in critical phases of melanoma development such as proliferation, migration, the ability to metastasise, and the response to chemotherapy [29][30][31][59][60][61][62][63].…”

“…For cutaneous melanoma, guidelines for followups exist. They are stage-specific and recommend history and physical examination at least annually [10]. Self-examination and patient education are important cornerstones in the follow-up surveillance.…”

“…Additionally, comparison of the frequency of early relapses in patients referred for trial participation with patients referred for regular adjuvant treatment is of interest. Furthermore, there is a lack of evidence regarding the role of incorporating imaging techniques in the follow-up of stage III melanoma patients in the current therapeutic era 4. Therefore, prospective studies comparing various imaging techniques and intervals might be helpful to the development of consensus regarding the timing and frequency of imaging prior, during, and after adjuvant therapy.…”
