Folic acid-grafted bovine serum albumin decorated graphene oxide: An efficient drug carrier for targeted cancer therapy

Abstract: Targeting drug carrier systems based on graphene oxide (GO) are of great interest, since it can selectively deliver anticancer drugs to tumor cells, and enhance therapeutic activities with minimized side effects. However, direct grafting target molecules on GO usually results in aggregation of physiological fluid, limiting its biomedical applications. Here, we propose a new strategy to construct targeting GO drug carrier using folic acid grafted bovine serum albumin (FA-BSA) as both the stabilizer and targetin… Show more

“…Moreover, the GO NPs provide a large specific surface area for the immobilization of anticancer agents (Hong, Compton, An, Eryazici, & Nguyen, ). In a research by Ma et al (), FA‐grafted bovine serum albumins (FA‐BSA) were immobilized on GO NPs for delivery of DOX as stabilizer and targeting agents. The FA‐BSA was decorated on the surface of GO NPs by the physical adsorption.…”

“… FA‐linked polymeric nanoparticles have been developed as theranostic materials; this includes the construction of a GSH‐responsive nanoparticle which was achieved by conjugating FA‐ss‐CDDP (FA‐modified S‐S bonds based prodrug of cisplatin) to the Tf‐ss‐OA (transferrin‐modified cystamine‐oleic acid) polymer for the targeted delivery of cisplatin (CDDP) . 2D GO was also immobilized with FA‐decorated BSA for the drug loading and delivery of DOX to MCF‐7 and A549 cells, in which BSA enabled FA to be hydrophobic enough to stack onto the GO platform.…”

“…In addition to the passive targeting of drugs by designing drug delivery vehicles of different sizes, it is often used to modify drug carriers with specific small molecules, peptides, proteins, etc., in order to achieve precise and controllable drug release and improve the treatment effect of drugs. Folic acid is a commonly used targeted small molecule that modifies DDSs . Liang et al.…”
