“…Fish fed FA‐free diets were not able to maintain leucocyte production after stress. Impaired synthesis and function of white cells under FA deficiency have already been described by Youinou, Garre, Menez, Boles, Morin, Pennec, Miossec, Morin and Le Menn (1982) in humans. “…However, dietary supplementation of vitamin B enhanced milk yield by 0.86 kg/day, milk fat yield by 0.07 kg/day, and milk protein yield by 0.06 kg/day, as well as decreased somatic cell count (SCC) from 611 × 1,000/ml to 349 × 1,000/ml (Sacadura, Robinson, Evans, & Lordelo, ) and ketosis prevalence from 36% to 20% (Havlin, Robinson, & Garrett, ) in early lactating cows. The beneficial effect seemed result from a better metabolic adaptation that rumen‐protected folic acid supplementation in dairy cow diets reduced blood NEFA by 4.6% and BHB by 3.0% (Li et al., ), and improved immune function that vitamin B 12 and folic acid could enhance neutrophil phagocytic ability (Kaplan & Basford, ; Youinou et al., ). In addition, vitamin B 6 , and B 12 and folate are involved in the biosynthesis of nucleic acid and protein by providing one‐carbon units, thus logically related to immune function, as antibodies and cytokines build up from amino acids.…”
