Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis Preceding Type 2 Papillary Renal Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the predominant renal malignancy in adults. Of the four general subtypes, papillary renal cell carcinoma (P-RCC) is the second most common and can be subdivided into type I, type II, and a mixture of type I and II. Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is the most common glomerulopathy at all ages, and it can be seen as a paraneoplastic syndrome. RCC, in general, is known to present with many paraneoplastic syndromes, and glomerulopathies are among these. Rarely, RCC and glome… Show more

“…In this setting, glomerular disease is believed to be the result of B and T cell activation, which induces local damage by monocytes (37). Case reports also suggest that FSGS and minimal change disease can occur as paraneoplastic syndromes related to renal cell carcinoma or ovarian cancer (38,39). Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is a rare syndrome of immune overactivation that is associated with infections and malignancies.…”

“…Paraneoplastic manifestations, with constitutional signs and symptoms (fever, cachexia, and weight loss), hypertension and/or metabolic anomalies (hypercalcemia, polycythemia, amyloidosis, hepatic dysfunction, and Cushing's syndrome) can also be present as in other RCCs [76]. For instance, new-onset proteinuria and various neuropathies have been documented specifically in pRCC cases [80][81][82][83].…”
