Focal neurologic symptoms in hypercalcemia

Abstract: An unusual clinical presentation of moderate hypercalcemia as a result of primary hyperparathyroidism is described. The patient complained of fatigue, depression, thirst, polyuria, and focal neurologic symptoms including amaurosis fugax, anomia, right upper-extremity dysesthesias, and a left cerebral transient ischemic attack. No structural central nervous system abnormality could be documented. Signs and symptoms disappeared when serum calcium levels were reduced from 13.2 to 9.8 mg/100 ml. They have not recu… Show more

“…In single patients with hypercalcemia due to hyperparathyroidism and hypervitaminosis D the occurrence of focal neurological deficits and cerebral infarction have been reported. A vascular etiology, such as vasospasm has been suggested [7,11].Another more recently published case report showed a possible association of seizures, cortical blindness and watershed infarctions with hypercalcemia in a hypertensive patient [5]. The authors discuss the analogy between the clinical presentation and cases of eclampsia.…”

“…Pasireiškė židininiai neurologiniai simptomai: centrinės kilmės aklumas (amaurosis fugax), anomija, dešinės rankos dizestezija ir praeinantis smegenų išemijos priepuolis. Simptomai išnyko, kai serumo kalcio koncentracija sumažėjo nuo 13,2 iki 9,8 mg/100 ml [38].…”
