Abstract: ST~LZER und SIMON Jahrg. 94 4.5-Dimethyl-5-mercnpto-caprorrsaure ( I X ) : 2 g des tertiarenThiol-lactons X werden mit 30 ccm 5 n HCI unter Erwarmung geschiittelt und 24 Stdn. stehengelassen. Dann wird ausgeathert und getrocknet. Ausb. an Rohprodukt: 90%. Bei der Destillation erfolgt wieder Ring-schlu0, und es wird ein Vorlauf an Thiol-lacton X erhalten. Die kernmagnetische Resonanz des 31 P-Kerns IaJt sich fur die Strukturaufklarung von Phosphor-Verbindungen sowie fur analytische und kinetische Untersuchungen verwenden. Es wird ein Uberblick iiber die bisher bestimmten 3lP-Resonanzen gegeben. Die kernmagnetische Resonanzspektroskopie hat in jiingster Zeit grolje Bedeutung fur den Chemiker erlangt. Das Hauptgewicht wurde mit Recht auf die Protonenresonanz gelegt, aber auch der 31P-Kern ergibt sehr brauchbare Resonanzspektren. Das Gebiet der 31P-Kernresonanz wurde 1958 von Finegold [I] zusammenfassend dargestellt ; ferner findet sich eine kurze Darstellung in dem Buche von Pople, Schneider und Bernstein [2a]. Einleitung Kerne rnit ungeraden Atom-oder Massenzahlen haben magnetische Momente. IH, 19F, 31P sind Beispiele dafiir. Diese Kerne prazedieren in einem Magnetfeld um die Feldrichtung mit einer Frcquenz, die der angelegten Feldstarke proportional ist. Die Proportionalitatskonstante hdngt von der Art des Kerns ab12bI. Fur den 31P-Kern liegt die Resonanzfrequenz in einem Magnetfeld VOII loo00 Gauss bei ungefahr 17,2 MHz. Die Prazession kann durch elektromagnetische Strahlung der Resonanzfrequenz gestort werden.So zeigt zum Beispiel die P-CH3-Gruppe vier Maxima im Intensitatsvcrhaltnis 1 : 3 : 3 : 1. Ganz allgemein geben zwei nicht aquivalente Phosphor-Kerne im gleichen Molekul zwei Dubletts, die durch Protonen oder Fluor-Kerne weiter aufgespalten werden konnen.Ob zwei Maxima von zwei Kernen rnit verschiedener chemischer Verschiebung herriihren oder von einem Kern, dessen Resonanz durch Spin-Spin-Wechselwirkung aufgespalten ist, IaiBt sich leicht feststellen. Die chemische Verschiebung (in ppm) ist unabhangig vom angelegten Feld oder von der Frequenz. Die Spin-Spin-Aufspaltung ist beiden proportional (daher gibt man sie gewohnlich in Hz, gelegentlich auch in Gauss an, aber nicht in ppm). Beobachtet man also eine Resonanz bei zwei Feldstarken, so wird die Distanz der beiden Maxima, gemessen in ppm, gleichbleiben, wenn sie von zwei verschiedenen Kernen herruhren, dagegen verschieden sein, wenn sie von einer Spin-Spin-Wechselwirkung stammen. Experimentelle Met hodenDer wesentliche Nachteil des 31P-Kernes fur die KMR-Spektroskopie ist sein kleines magnetisches Moment.Daher betragt die Empfindlichkeit nur ungefahr 7 % der Empfindlichkeit fur 1Hoder IsF-Kerne bei derselben Feldstarke. Allerdings erstrecken sich die chemischen Verschiebungen beim 3lP iiber einen Bereich von 500.10-6, verglichen rnit ungefahr 10.10-6 bei der 1H-Resonanz, so daB uberschneidungen der Maxima beim 60

It is well known from laboratory experiments that in the recombination process by three-body collisions, N2 and NO are formed to a large extent as electronically excited species. Especially in the case of NO it seems from our experimentation that the formation of electronically excited species is by far the most abundant process. It seems to be only reasonable to expect that electronically excited oxygen should be formed to a large extent by three-body recombination [2]. The Herzberg bands are actually emitted very weakly as is known from laboratory experiments with 0-atom-02 mixtures at about 1 mm. pressure. The atmospheric oxygen bands are somewhat more intense. The observed intensity of these bands is many decades weaker than the.light emission from the recombination processes of active nitrogen or from the NO formation under analogous conditions. It must be realized, however, that in the case of N2 and NO there are electronically excited states from which allowed transitions emitting light can occur, whereas in the case of the 0 2 the electronically excited species can only make forbidden or strongly forbidden transitions. Therefore the activated 0 2 species may become de-activated before light emission. We have some indication for this. In the night sky radiation, the Herzberg bands are most likely due to the process: O + O + M + 0 2 ( 3 2 3 + M and Received M a y 2, 1961 [A 164/3 IE] [43] G . ManneNa and P. Harteck, J. chem. Physics, in press. Nuclear magnetic resonance of the 31P nucleus IS suitable for the structural elucidation of phosphorus compounds, also for analytical and kinetic studies. In this paper, an attempt has been made towards the presentation of a comprehensive review of all 31P resonances so for determined.Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has recently become a technique of great importance to the chemist. The main emphasis has rightly been placed on proton resonance, but it has been found that the 31P nucleus gives rise to very useful resonance spectra. This subject was reviewed by Finegoldtl] in 1958, and a short account is also to be found in the book written by Pople, Bernstein, and Schneider [2a].
