Fluorinated star-shaped block copolymers: Synthesis and optical properties

Abstract: Tetrakis(4-(1-bromoethyl)phenyl)silane is synthesized and utilized to initiate the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) to generate bromo-terminated four-armed PMMA macroinitiators, which further initiate the ATRP of methylacryloyloxyl-2-hydroxypropyl perfluorooctanoate (FGOA) to create fluorinated star-shaped block copolymers PMMA-b-poly(FGOA)s with fluorine content ranging from 0 to 31.7 wt %. The polymerizations are well controlled with the polydispersity indices <1.30. T… Show more

“…DEAEMA and HEMA were distilled to remove the inhibitor just prior to use. CuBr was purified by stirring over acetic acid for 24 h at room temperature followed by washing with acetone before drying at 40 °C under vacuum for 24 h. Tetrakis(4‐(1‐bromoethyl)phenyl)silane (BTES) was prepared according to the procedure described in the previous paper …”

“…Fluorine-containing polymers are attractive materials that can satisfy the wettability and transparency requirements of surfaces because of their low surface energy and low reflective index. , Moreover, they exhibit outstanding properties such as unique water and oil repellency, self-cleaning capability, excellent thermal and chemical stability, and low dielectric constant. On the other hand, the practical applications of fluorine-containing polymers are limited by their low solubility in common solvents, low compatibility with hydrocarbon polymers, low adhesion to any substrate, and high cost. Copolymerization with various monomers has been explored as an alternative to overcome these limitations. ,, …”
