Fluorescence in situ Hybridization Applied to Domestic Animal Cytogenetics

Abstract: The aim of this article is not to present an exhaustive review of molecular cytogenetics applications in domestic animal species, but more to illustrate the considerable contribution of these approaches in diagnostics and research in economically important species. A short presentation of the main applications of molecular cytogenetics in humans points out the domains in which it has become an essential tool and underlines the specificities attached to this species in comparison to farm animals. This article i… Show more

“…Previously, applications of molecular cytogenetics have been predominantly focused on economically important species [reviewed by Iannuzzi et al, 2009 andRubes et al, 2009] and have been aimed especially at gene and comparative mapping and the identification of chromosome abnormalities.…”

“…Obecnie coraz szersze zastosowanie w diagnostyce cytogenetycznej znajdują badania molekularne techniką hybrydyzacji in situ (FISH) (17,19,32). Metoda ta może być wykorzystana zarówno w analizach chromosomowych mutacji strukturalnych i liczbowych oraz lokalizacji genów, jak i identyfikacji chromosomów w komórkach somatycznych i rozrodczych oraz w obserwacjach przebiegu mejozy w mikroskopie fluorescencyjnym (3,4,11,27).…”

“…Labeling the painting probes with several fluorochromes in a combinatorial approach allows identification of all 24 human chromosome types in a single experiment (Speicher et al 1996; Schrock et al 1996). Chromosome painting probes can be prepared also in animals; in addition, to study chromosome aberrations (Rubeš et al 2009), major applications have included cross-species (comparative) chromosome painting, which is termed ZOO–FISH (Scherthan et al 1994). This is a very useful technique to analyze evolution and phylogeny (Ferguson-Smith 1997; Ferguson-Smith and Trifonov 2007; Nie et al 2012).…”
