“…Webb and co-workers have shown that the emission arises from an overall 6-photon process with 830 nm photons, and may be resolved into a 4-photon excitation of 5HT to the transient fluorescing intermediate, and a 2-photon excitation of fluorescence 4 . Luminescence in the region of 550 nm has also been reported from 5-hydroxytryptamine in acidic solutions 8 . Shear et al 4 suggest that multiphoton-induced hyperluminescence from 5HT might arise from the 5-indoxyl radical, known to be formed by photoionisation of 5HT by 248 nm laser flash photolysis 9 , and which has also been studied by pulse radiolysis [10][11][12][13] .…”

“…It is unlikely that brain 5-HT is derived from circulating blood 5-HT, as 5-HT will not penetrate the blood-brain barrier (a fact confirmed by the absence of mental symptoms in patients with argentaffinoma). On the other hand 5-hydroxytryptophan penetrates the blood-brain barrier readily (Udenfriend, Bogdanski and Weissbach, 1956) and injection of 5-hydroxytryptophan, unlike 5-HT, will cause a rise in brain 5-HT levels, as is to be expected from the presence of 5-hydroxytryptophan decarboxylase in the brain.…”

“…The following modifications were made: (a) to obtain good recoveries of 5-HT it was found essential to have the pH of the borate buffer between 9-5 and 9*8; and (b) the 5-HT was finally extracted into 3N-HC1 instead of dilute HC1, and the 5-HT determined fluorimetrically (cf. Udenfriend, Bogdanski and Weissbach, 1955) using the fluorimeter of Laurence (1957), instead of colorimetrically. The filter for the exciting light was a 3 cm.…”

“…5-Hydroxytryptamine was extracted with n-butanol by the method of Udenfriend, Weissbach, and Clark (1955), as modified by Cargill-Thompson, Jiardwick, and Wiseman (1958) and Baker (1959), and assayed on the rat gastric fundus preparation (Vane, 1957).…”
