Abstract: A drinking pattern based on water and milk was associated with better hydration, as indicated by lower urine osmolality, whereas drinking regular soda and other drinks but not water was associated with inferior hydration.

“…The result was similar with the study conducted among young male adults in China [9]. In a study conducted among children, participants with optimal hydration had higher water consumption than hypohydrated participants [34], and the component with water and milk was negatively correlated with urine osmolality [22]. In this study, the contribution of SSBs to total drinking uids among females with middle hydration status was much higher than that among females with optimal hydration.…”

“…Though, the contributions of SSBs to total drinking uids in males were not signi cantly different in the three groups, but the proportions were ranging from 8.5-19.1%. It was showed that regular soda and other uids was positively correlated with urine osmolality [22]. Moreover, water including tap or bottled water delivered optimal hydration group without adding calories [35], and lower consumers of water and fruit juices showed a higher risk of hypohydration [34].…”

“…Therefore, more interventions should be undertaken to increase the consumptions of milk and milk products. In addition, a study demonstrated that drinking pattern based on water and milk among children was associated with better hydration including lower urine osmolality, while drinking regular soda and other drinks but not water was associated with inferior hydration [58].…”

“…Fluid pattern analyses in children and adolescents have been conducted in the USA [30] and Canada [35]. Bougatsas et al identified six clusters [30] including one which was similar to the low drinkers–water and milk cluster.…”

“…Fluid intake has been evaluated using multiple regression analysis [19], principal component analysis [30] and a dynamic panel model [31]. Another multivariate technique that can be applied to fluid intake is cluster analysis.…”
