Flow instability in a volute-free centrifugal fan subjected to non-axisymmetric pre-swirl flow from upstream bended inflow tube

Abstract: The characteristics of internal flow and performance of a centrifugal fan is greatly dependent on the inflow pattern. As the fan is subjected to incoming flow from an upstream tube, the size and geometry of the tube affect the three-dimensional motion of local flow and possibly degrades the aerodynamic performance of the fan. In this work, we performed a numerical investigation on the internal flow in a centrifugal fan subjected to incoming flow from an upstream bended inflow tube of various radii using the st… Show more

“…We performed the grid sensitivity study and validation for the fan without motor intrusion since experimental data are available. 30 The computational domain, including the fan, inflow tube and outflow cavity, is discretized by unstructured grid as shown in Figure 3. The grid is refined at the solid surfaces that the averaged value of y + is about 4.29 for the several simulations.…”

“…The shorter the axial clearance between the motor and the hub or impeller backplate, the better the aerodynamic performance of the fan. Liu et al 11 explored the effect of inflow mode on the internal flow characteristics and performance of a voluteless centrifugal fan, concluding that since the fan is affected by the inflow airflow from the upstream duct, the size and geometry of the duct can affect the three-dimensional motion local flow and may reduce fan aerodynamic performance. Zhang et al 12 proposed a method of correcting the blade profile of a backward centrifugal fan by applying the steepest descent method, analyzed the direction of gradient descent to design the blade profile, and obtained the optimal blade profile under large flow.…”
