Flow dynamics in Taylor–Couette flow reactor with axial distribution of temperature

Abstract: In this study, the flow dynamics of a Taylor–Couette flow with an axial distribution of temperature was experimentally investigated. The flow can be classified into three patterns based on the balance between the centrifugal force and the buoyancy. If the buoyancy is dominant, global heat convection is observed instead of Taylor vortices (Case I). When the buoyancy is comparable to the centrifugal force, the Taylor vortices and global heat convection appear alternately (Case II). If the centrifugal force is su… Show more

“…The photocatalytic degradation process for every drop of test solution was completed within less than 0.1 S. Notably, the disk was made of polycarbonate, which can be recycled from optical storage waste, making it environmentally beneficial. A Taylor vortex reactor [62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69] includes two cylinders that are arranged in symmetrically and can be oriented vertically (Figure 3a) or horizontally. Typically, the inner cylinder rotates at a high speed relative to the outer fixed cylinder.…”

“…In general, a Taylor vortex reactor is typical highly efficient [62][63][64][65][66][67] and the photocatalyst can be deposited on the outer surface of the rotating inner cylinder. A tube lamp can provide excitation light from the inside.…”

“…The time‐dependent wavy motion was not observed within the simulated condition. Although Taylor vortices are significantly influenced by buoyancy , the effect of buoyancy was not observed due to the horizontal arrangement.…”

“…In a preliminary study, from the viewpoint of fluid flow and heat transfer, Masuda et al numerically investigated the characteristics of heat transfer for shear‐thinning fluids , . They constructed a correlation equation for Re and Nusselt number ( Nu ), which is practically important in shear‐thinning fluid systems.…”

“…Further, a nonuniform temperature field along the TCR influences the flow dynamics. If an axial temperature gradient exists along the TCR, three additional sub flow patterns can be classified for the Taylor Couette flow 53 . These depend on the ratio of centrifugal and buoyancy forces.…”
