Floristic diversity of two crystalline rocky outcrops in the Brazilian northeast semi-arid region

Abstract: -(Floristic diversity of two crystalline rocky outcrops in the Brazilian northeast semi-arid region). Floristic composition and structure of vegetation were studied in two rocky outcrop areas in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. From April 2007 to September 2008, 18 monthly field trips were carried out. Vascular plants were randomly collected throughout the outcrop areas. For structural analysis, 30 plots of 1 × 1 m were set in the vegetation islands. The checklist presented combines 211 species (69… Show more

“…Some studies of rock outcrops in Brazil found phanerophytes and/or hemicryptophytes to be predominant (Safford & Martinelli 2000;Caiafa & Silva 2005;Ribeiro et al 2007;Gomes & Alves 2010), while others exhibited a greater proportion of chamaephytes (Porembski et al 1998;Conceição & Giulietti 2002;Conceição et al 2007) and terophytes (Gomes & Sobral-Leite 2013). The large number of phanerophytes found in the present study may be due to the geomorphology of the studied inselberg, which is comprised of many depressions.…”

“…Esgario et al (2009) also found a great richness of Orchidaceae for montane inselbergs in the midwest of ES. Orchidaceae family represents one of the principal floristic elements of inselbergs of northeastern Brazil, with high levels of endemism (Porembski et al1998;França et al 2006;Gomes & Alves 2010;Pessoa & Alves 2014). In both areas, the montane or cloud inselbergs, a favorable environmental factor, such as presence of continuous or intermittent clouds, responsible for horizontal precipitation, seems to be the main reason for this richness, as observed for other groups of xeric environments such as vascular epiphytes (Nieder et al 2001).…”
