Floristic composition of a Neotropical inselberg from Espírito Santo state, Brazil: an important area for conservation

Abstract: Our study on granitic and gneissic rock outcrops on Pedra dos Pontões in Espírito Santo state contributes to the knowledge of the vascular flora of inselbergs in southeastern Brazil. We registered 211 species distributed among 51 families and 130 genera. Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae and Polypodiaceae were the most representative families. Concerning vegetative habit, herbs were predominant and about the preference for substrates, holorupicolous species and epiphytes were most speciose. The richest rocky habitat t… Show more

“…The Pseudobombax species is, to our knowledge, the main phorophyte kind of rocky areas of the Atlantic Forest and replace it does not seem to be that simple. The inselbergs in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest are exposed to a number of threats, ranging from the loss and fragmentation of marginal habitats (Galindo-Leal et al 2003), by quarrying (Martinelli 2007;Couto et al 2016), by the invasion by exotic species (Martinelli 2007, De Paula et al 2016Couto et al 2017) and indiscriminate collection of species for horticultural purposes (e.g. attractive giant bromeliads, such the genus Alcantarea (Versieux & Wanderley 2015; some orchids as Aspasia lunata and Encyclia patens; ferns and araceaes).…”

“…Due to their insular nature and unique combination abiotic factors, the inselbergs are ecologically characterized by a range of harsh conditions, such as high temperatures and radiation, and low water and nutrient contents in the soil (Barthlott et al 1993). These characteristics promote the occurrence of high numbers of geographically restricted, specialized, and threatened species (Porembski & Barthlott 2000;Porembski 2007;De Paula et al 2016;Couto et al 2017), and their conservation is of global importance (Porembski et al 2016).…”

“…Indivíduos com raízes profundas que necessitam de uma maior quantidade de substrato e água se desenvolvem no entorno do afloramento onde esses recursos estão disponíveis. Enquanto espécies que se desenvolvem sobre a rocha exposta apresentam adaptações para sobrevivência nesses ambientes, como acúmulo de água em bainhas foliares (Biedinger et al 2000) ou presença de órgãos de reserva e folhas mais suculentas (Couto et al 2017), dentre outros.…”

“…In neotropical studies, both families here included are very representative as far as richness is concerned (Rodrigues et al 2017). Therefore, new studies are required to improve the characterization of the biodiversity of the region and to promote the species protection inside the RBBM.…”
