Floral biology of Tropaeolum majus L. (Tropaeolaceae) and its relation with Astylus variegatus activity (Germar 1824) (Coleoptera: Melyridae)

Abstract: Tropaeolum majus L. (nasturtium) is a culture popularly known by its medicinal, ornamental and culinary utility. This work aimed to evaluate the interaction between Astylus variegatus (Germar 1824) (Coleoptera: Melyridae) and the nasturtium flowers associated to the weeks of flourishing, in order to conceive the floral mechanisms used by the species to attract A. variegatus. The insects collection was achieved with an entomologic net by the sweeping method, during the weekly flowering, at two hours, from 7am t… Show more

“…Each floral bud had 3 carpels, 5 petals and 5 sepals. These results are in agreement with Silva et al (2011), which verified the presence of corolla and chalice pentamers and gynoceum with stigma divided into 3 parts, which corresponds to the existence of 3 carpels.…”

“…The analysis of variance only revealed statistical difference for the characteristic number of stamens in T. majus (Table 3). The overall mean number of stamens in the experiment was 8.23, corroborating Silva et al (2011) who observed 8 stamens with different sizes in the floral buds of T. majus, being 4 larger, 3 medium and 1 smaller. Note.…”

“… Tropaeolum and Arabidopsis genes are functionally replaceable, as had been shown for FAD2 encoding a fatty acid desaturase [20]. Research fields that may particularly benefit from the here-described expression system include those of xyloglucan metabolism [21], oleate biosynthesis [22] and endosymbiosis [23] and plant-insect interaction [24]. Given the health-promoting effects of Tropaeolum majus , including utinary tract protection [25,26], antidiuretic [27] and even anti-tumor activity [28], conquering this plant for genetic manipulations harbours potential for biotechnological and pharmacological applications.…”

“…A No comment is provided on the pollen in other species where pollination biology has been studied (e.g. T. majus inSilva et al, 2011; T. pentaphyllum [subsp. pentaphyllum] inFabbri & Valla, 1998), their studies concentrating on the pollinators.…”
