Floor Identification Using Magnetic Field Data with Smartphone Sensors

Abstract: Floor identification plays a key role in multi-story indoor positioning and localization systems. Current floor identification systems rely primarily on Wi-Fi signals and barometric pressure data. Barometric systems require installation of additional standalone sensors to perform floor identification. Wi-Fi systems, on the other hand, are vulnerable to the dynamic environment and adverse effects of path loss, shadowing, and multipath fading. In this paper, we take advantage of a pervasive magnetic field to com… Show more

Although the magnetic field data has been reported to be used for floor detection [18], yet the pressure sensor is a reliable source for floor detection in the short run. “…WLAN, RFID, and Bluetooth are among the RF-based techniques. Audio, visual, ultra-sonic, Infra-Red (IR), laser sensors, and magnetic field are considered as non-RF-based methods [15][16][17][18]. In this article, we mainly focus on RF-based techniques.…”

“…However, the magnetic data sequence will generate large fluctuations due to the device heterogeneity. Even though some methods have been studied to solve this problem, they cannot be implemented in real-time positioning [20][21][22]. What is worse is that SBMP is restricted by the trajectory and walking speed [16,23].…”
