Bioflocculants of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii were investigated under axenic conditions. C. reinhardtii was found to produce significant amounts of bioflocculants. Flocculating activity by C. reinhardtii began in the linear phase of growth and continued until the end of the stationary phase. The highest flocculating efficiency of the culture broth was 97.06%. The purified C. reinhardtii bioflocculant was composed of 42.1% (w/w) proteins, 48.3% carbohydrates, 8.7% lipids, and 0.01% nucleic acid. The optimum condition for bioflocculant production of C. reinhardtii was as follows: under temperature of 15°C to 25°C, pH 6-10 and illumination of 40-60 μmol photons m −2 s −1 . The bioflocculants produced by C. reinhardtii showed maximum activity in pH ranges from 2 to 10. The flocculating activity was significantly enhanced by the addition of CaCl 2 as a coflocculant at an optimal concentration of 4.5 mM.

Biosurfactants are structurally diverse surface-active agents mostly produced by various genera of bacteria, yeast and filamentous fungi that have a wide range of applications and properties. They have surface and interfacial activity, temperature and pH tolerance, biodegradability, low toxicity and anti-adhesive property. Their production was reported to be affected by temperature, PH, aeration and agitation, salt concentration and carbon and nitrogen sources. Bacteria species of the genera Acinetobacter, Arthrobacter, Agrobacterium, Antarctobacter, Bacillus, Clostridium, Lactobacillus, Halomonas, Serratia, Rhodococcus and filamentous fungi of the genera Aspergillus, penicillium, and yeast like Candida, Yarrowia, Torulopsis, Pseudozyma, Saccharomyces were the most notable biosurfactant producing microorganisms. Surfactin, lichenysin, rhamnolipid, Sapporolipid, liposan, viscosin, alasan, and subtilisin were among the most produced biosurfactants. The need to expand knowledge of physiology, genetics and biochemistry of biosurfactant-producing strains and the development of the process technology will help to reduce production costs.

The increasing demand of fossil fuels resources and their continuous consumption has created a necessity for exploring the alternative resources of energy like gas hydrates. Gas hydrates exist under oceans and in permafrost regions. They are also known as methane hydrates or methane clathrates. These are stable at high pressure and low temperature. These are formed when methane gas comes in contact with sediments saturated with water. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis were found in gas hydrates samples investigations from Gulf of Mexico and these microbes generated biosurfactants like Rhamnolipid and Surfactin. The current paper reports the effects of biosurfactants such as Rhamnolipid, Surfactin, Snomax, Emulsan, Phospholipids, Hydroxystearic acid etc. on Gas Hydrate formation.
