“…These findings are consistent with some previous studies in teleosts (Villani and Guarnieri, 1995), but not with others (Brüning et al, 1995). Studies in land vertebrates also show that these structures are nitrergic (Smeets et al, 1997;Gonzalez et al, 2002;Lopez and Gonzalez, 2002;de Araujo Moreira et al, 2003). The presence of labeled cells in the torus semicircularis and nucleus isthmi could involve a role of NO in the modulation of sensory signals (Holmqvist et al, 1994;Ando et al, 2004).…”

“…Other studies using intra-mesencephalic pharmacological approaches have shown that the NMDA receptor can mediate fear-related defensive responses evoked by local microinjection of the NO donor SIN-1, an active metabolite of molsidomine. For example, the blockade of NMDA receptors in both periaqueductal grey (PAG) matter and the inferior colliculus was able to impair the jumping reaction and locomotor activity (distance moved), respectively, induced by SIN-1 microinjected in these same midbrain tectum structures (de Araújo Moreira et al, 2003; Moreira et al, 2004). In fact, the NMDA receptor seems to influence the nitrergic effect on mesencephalic defensive behaviours.…”

“…16,17 And, centrally administered SIN-1-produced flight reactions in rats and panic-like behavior in mice depended on NMDA receptor activation. 32,33 In this study, the SIN-1-induced ICI reduction was attenuated by icv-pretreated MK-801 (10 and 30 nmol/rat), an antagonist of NMDA receptors in continuous cystometry. On the other hand, an AMPA receptor antagonist DNQX (3 nmol/rat) showed no effect on the SIN-1-induced response in continuous cystometry.…”
