Bedsores are one of the severe problems which could affect a long-term lying subject in the hospitals or the hospice. To prevent lying bedsores, we present a smart Internet of Things (IoT) system for detecting the position of a lying person using novel textile pressure sensors. To build such a system, it is necessary to use different technologies and techniques. We used sixty-four of our novel textile pressure sensors based on electrically conductive yarn and the Velostat to collect the information about the pressure distribution of the lying person. Using Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol and Arduino-based hardware, we send measured data to the server. On the server side, there is a Node-RED application responsible for data collection, evaluation, and provisioning. We are using a neural network to classify the subject lying posture on the separate device because of the computation complexity. We created the challenging dataset from the observation of twenty-one people in four lying positions. We achieved a best classification precision of 92% for fourth class (right side posture type). On the other hand, the best recall (91%) for first class (supine posture type) was obtained. The best F1 score (84%) was achieved for first class (supine posture type). After the classification, we send the information to the staff desktop application. The application reminds employees when it is necessary to change the lying position of individual subjects and thus prevent bedsores.

Purpose Tactile sensation is an important sensory function for robots in contact with the external environment. To better acquire tactile information about objects, this paper aims to propose a three-layer structure of the interdigital flexible tactile sensor. Design/methodology/approach The sensor consists of a bottom electrode layer, a middle pressure-sensitive layer and a top indenter layer. First, the pressure sensitive material, structure design, fabrication process and circuit design of the sensor are introduced. Then, the calibration and performance test of the designed sensor is carried out. Four functions are used to fit and calibrate the relationship between the output voltage of the sensor and the contact force. Finally, the contact force sensing test of different weight objects and the flexible test of the sensor are carried out. Findings The performance test results show that the sensitivity of the sensor is 0.93 V/N when it is loaded with 0–3 N and 0.23 V/N when it is loaded with 3–5 N. It shows good repeatability, and the cross-interference between the sensing units is generally low. The contact force sensing test results of different weight objects show that the proposed sensor performs well in contact force. Each part of the sensor is a flexible material, allowing the sensor to achieve bending deformation, so that the sensor can better perceive the contact signs of the grasped object. Practical implications The sensor can paste the surface of the paper robot’s gripper to measure the contact force of the grasping object and estimate the contour of the object. Originality/value In this paper, a three-layer interdigital flexible tactile sensor is proposed, and the structural parameters of the interdigital electrode are designed to improve the sensitivity and response speed of the sensor. The indenter with three shapes of the prism, square cylinder and hemisphere is preliminarily designed and the prism indenter with better conduction force is selected through finite element analysis, which can concentrate the external force in the sensing area to improve the sensitivity. The sensor designed in this paper can realize the measurement of contact force, which provides a certain reference for the field of robot tactile.

Data Glove with Integrated Polyethylene‐Carbon Composite‐Based Strain Sensor for Virtual Reality Applications

A data glove enables fine motion control in virtual reality (VR). This work presents a cost‐effective data glove made of a commercial nylon‐based glove with integrated polyethylene‐carbon composites (Velostat). The resistance of the Velostat varies when a finger is bent. This piezoresistive behavior was explored by designing the Velostat as the strain sensor. The strain sensor was characterized for its flexure sensing by connecting it to a data acquisition circuit. The circuit is designed to process the output of the joint angles and feed it to the computer. A linear resistance output was measured with a sensitivity/gauge factor of 1.45 % per degree with a response time of 0.0158 seconds when the strain sensor bends from 0° to 30°. To control the 3D virtual hand's movement, the data glove was coupled with two inertial measurement unit sensors at the forearm and upper arm to identify its coordinates. The fabricated data glove successfully performs a proof‐of‐concept by picking‐and‐placing multiple objects in a VR environment.
