Flexible Hard Coating: Glass‐Like Wear Resistant, Yet Plastic‐Like Compliant, Transparent Protective Coating for Foldable Displays

Abstract: A flexible hard coating for foldable displays is realized by the highly cross-linked siloxane hybrid using structure-property relationships in organic-inorganic hybridization. Glass-like wear resistance, plastic-like flexibility, and highly elastic resilience are demonstrated together with outstanding optical transparency. It provides a framework for the application of siloxane hybrids in protective hard coatings with high scratch resistance and flexibility for foldable displays.

“…Comparing the low exposure dose (60 mJ cm −2 ) with the high exposure dose (2 J cm −2 ), the intensity is high, which indicates the FEH film was not fully poly merized after the low exposure dose. [31] Thus, to fully www.advelectronicmat.de polymerize FEH films, the high exposure dose (UV-A region, 2 J cm −2 ) was induced.…”

“…[10] The dyes were added in siloxane matrix during sol-gel reaction of the siloxane resin. [11] In case of the IR dye-doped siloxane based coating films for IR cut off filter (IR-dye siloxane film), we used two different types of IR absorbing dye from QCR Solution Corp. For coating process, dye-doped siloxane resin was mixed with 2-butanone (MEK). The solutions were coated the COP film by bar coating.…”

“…Also, we need thick hard coating to obtain high hardness on the soft plastic substrate. Thus, we have developed epoxy siloxane based flexible hard coating material (Flex9H ® ) exhibiting glass-like strength and plastic-like modulus to be applicable to foldable smartphone cover film [1]. Its coating with over 35m thickness demonstrated 9H pencil hardness and perfect foldability with less than 1mm in-folding radius [2].…”

“…The tensile stress created maximum strain value (ε) at the outside surface during folding is z R   (1) z is the distance from the stress neutral plane and R is the radius of curvature at the stress neutral plane. For the hard coating to have better out-foldability; obtain smaller folding radius, there are two options: Increase in elastic elongation, i.e., yield strain (εy) and decrease in thickness of the device module including hard coating thickness.…”
