Fleas as parasites of the family Canidae

Abstract: Historically, flea-borne diseases are among the most important medical diseases of humans. Plague and murine typhus are known for centuries while the last years brought some new flea-transmitted pathogens, like R. felis and Bartonella henselae. Dogs may play an essential or an accidental role in the natural transmission cycle of flea-borne pathogens. They support the growth of some of the pathogens or they serve as transport vehicles for infected fleas between their natural reservoirs and humans. More than 15 … Show more

“…Ctenocephalides felis felis Bouché, 1835 (Pulicidae) is permanent parasite and the primary flea infesting cats and dogs in most of the world (DRYDEN & RUST, 1994). The human flea, Pulex irritans Linnaeus, 1758, has worldwide distribution and a wide host spectrum and may reach high prevalence rates in dogs, especially in areas where they are in close contact with humans (DOBLER & PFEFFER, 2011).…”

“…1 These insects are considered ectoparasites of dogs and cats 2 and also infest and readily feed on other species of domestic animals and humans. 3 Ctenocephalides felis felis (cat flea), C. canis (dog flea), Pulex irritans (human flea), Echidnophaga gallinacea (sticktight poultry flea), and Xenopsylla cheopis (rat flea) are the most commonly reported species on dogs and cats.…”

“…There are nearly 2000 species of fleas (95%) found on mammals, but fewer species can be found on birds and other hosts [1]. Ectoparasitism is a very serious threat to both animals and humans all over the world caused by parasites that live on the surface of the host that are called ectoparasites (e.g.…”
