Flaxseed Consumption May Reduce Blood Pressure: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Controlled Trials

Abstract: The present meta-analysis suggests that consumption of flaxseed may lower blood pressure slightly. The beneficial potential of flaxseed to reduce blood pressure (especially diastolic blood pressure) may be greater when it is consumed as a whole seed and for a duration of >12 wk.

“…The risk of bias for each item is expressed simply as low risk, high risk or unclear risk of bias (27) . A previous analysis of fifty randomly selected meta-analyses of RCT (28) showed that 70 % applied the risk of bias assessment tool by the Cochrane collaboration, 10 % the Jadad scale (29) , 14 % reported no risk of bias/study quality/study limitations item, 4 % applied their own score and one study used the Rosendal scale (30) . A promising new evidence-synthesis method for intervention studies is network meta-analysis (NMA), which is an extension of pairwise meta-analysis that enables a simultaneous comparison of multiple interventions, forming a connected network while preserving the internal randomisation of individual trials.…”

“…Linseed, as this is high in dietary fiber, lignans and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and there is some evidence for CVD-related benefits as per three reviews [32][33][34] and a recent trial [35]. More specifically, two meta-analyses report blood pressure reduction associated with linseed consumption [21,22]. Walnut (English walnut), as there is evidence that this food can benefit cardiovascular health as per a systematic review [36] and another recent review [37].…”

“…But other aspects of bread design can also be considered from a CVD prevention perspective given the evidence from systematic reviews around: increasing dietary fiber [19,20] and increasing linseed (flaxseed) intake which is high in alpha-linolenic acid [21,22]. Yet despite this evidence, our examination of the literature (as of June 2015) identified no optimization studies specifically relating to the design of heart healthy bread, and none concerning the design of low-cost healthier bread.…”
