Flavonoids with antibacterial and antioxidant potentials from the stem bark of Uapaca heudelotti

Abstract: Two flavonol glycosides; U1: naringenin-7-O-glucoside and U2: kaempferol-3-O-glucoside were isolated for the first time, from ethyl acetate fraction of the stem bark of a traditional medicinal plant called Uapaca heudelotti. IR and NMR spectroscopy were used to elucidate the structures of the isolated compound. The two compounds were active against the 7 tested microorganisms; Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella typhi, Streptococcus pyogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus… Show more

“…The phytochemical screening result of CR extracts exposed the presence of avonoids, phenols and tannins whereas VS extract contained saponins, avonoids and phenols and tannins (Table 1).Previous data related to phytochemical screening exposed that ethanolic extract of VS showed the presence of amino acids, reducing sugars and avonoids (12).These phytochemical constituents in medicinal plants contain antioxidant activity, play role in plant defense; act as toxic material to the pathogens (38,39).…”

“…So far, some of these compounds have been identified in methanol extracts of Echeveria species as: kaempferol-3-O-glucoside in E. subrigida, epigallocatechin gallate in E. kimnachii, and lupeol in both E. craigiana and E. kimnachii [43]. These compounds isolated from other plants have shown antibacterial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria [44][45][46], furthermore, other components of plants extract, as essential oils, as those from Atalantia sessiflora, have antibacterial and antiparasitic activities [47], but their mechanisms of action are unknown.…”

“…The major component of the extract of rose petals is kaempferol-3-O-glucoside, alongside with other kaempferol glycosides, and it has been shown to have antimicrobial and antioxidant effects [ 66 , 67 , 68 ]. The rose geranium extract, also rich in flavonoids (quercetin glycosides), had strong antimicrobial and antiviral activity in our study; our results are in agreement with earlier reports on the antimicrobial activity of geranium extracts [ 63 , 69 ] and quercetin derivatives [ 66 ].…”
