Flavonoids composition and antioxidant potential assessment of extracts from Gannanzao Navel Orange (Citrus sinensis Osbeck Cv. Gannanzao) peel

Abstract: The antioxidant effect of 95% ethanol extract and its three subextracts, PE (petroleum ether), EtOAc (ethyl acetate), and water extracts, from Gannanzao navel orange peel, were evaluated by ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)), DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl) and FRAP (ferric reducing/antioxidant potential) methods for the first time.Furthermore, the TPC (total polyphenol content), TFC (total flavonoid content), and primary individual flavonoids of the four extracts were analy… Show more

“…This trend was in accordance with the previous finding by Anagnostopoulou et al ., showing that the ethyl acetate extract accumulated the largest amount of TPC in comparison with the other extraction solvents, including diethyl ether, n ‐butanol, and water. In agreement with the present results, the ethyl acetate extract of Gannanzao navel orange peel exhibited the highest TPC (83.36 GAE mg g −1 DW) when compared with 95% ethanol, petroleum ether, and water extracts . The TPC of 80% methanol / water extract of C. sinensis var.…”

“…The peel extracts of Gannanzao navel orange ( Citrus sinensis Osbeck cv. Gannanzao), a bud mutation of Newhall, exhibited similar antioxidant capacities to the present study, with IC 50 being 38.33, 202.33, 586.08, and 378.93 μg mL −1 for the ethyl acetate, petroleum ether, water and 95% ethanol extracts, respectively, in the DPPH assay . “…Given that Isoori belongs to flavonoids that have been reported to have antioxidant activity 38,39 , its effects on the oxidative stress indicators like glutathione synthetase (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and ascorbic acid (VC) levels were also investigated. Compared to the vehicle solution, Isoori effectively increased the concentrations of GSH, SOD, and VC in paws injected with formalin, but suppressed formalin stimulated MDA production in a dose-dependent manner ( Supplementary Fig.…”
